Using Split Information Tasks

Pair the students in mixed ability pairs. Sit each student in pairs facing each other. Spread the pair throughout the class. Desks should have distance between them to aid listening. The activity is noisy.

Call one student A. The other is B. Distribute the A sheets. Then distribute the B sheets. Read the student instructions out loud. Then go through two examples.

During the lesson : Ensure that students do not look at each others task sheets during the lesson. Answer any questions about procedure. Help with reading difficulties but make it clear that students' talk is very important. With content questions use questioning to draw attention to the task material. This should stimulate a problem solving approach rather than teacher dependence.

Instructions for students : Do not show your work to your partners. It is your own special work. Finish each question well. To finish a question, you need to listen well. Talk about it to get your answer. You may need to talk a lot. Find an answer you both think is correct. You may be A. You may be B. A has half the answer. B has half the answer. You must talk about your part. Your friend will talk about her/his part. Ask and listen to get the whole answer.

On completion : Each student in a pair compares their answers with their partner. On whole class completion the teacher goes through the answers.
